Our History

Level Up (formerly Shanan Classical) was founded by Robin Hancock in 1995 - and was originally just a Co-Op where parents work together for the benefit of all the students in the co-op. But as our students grew older, there was a realization that the benefits of group learning while maintaining control as homeschool parents was absolutely needed. Thus, the development of Tutorials came to be and began with British Literature and Personal Finance in 1998. Now, nearly 30 years later, we have expanded into a full spectrum of courses offered, focusing on the core subjects necessary for high school graduation and college entrance — math, science, and English — as well as a full range of courses and elective subjects.

This program was originally started to meet the personal needs of a few families, but has now grown to being utilized by many homeschool families in the Greater Southern Charlotte, Union County, and Indian Land, SC areas.

In late 2020, Shanan Classical transitioned to Level Up Educational Academy. While our program continues to grow, our long-term goals are not to become large so we remain personal in nature while committed to a challenging, yet supportive, environment for all participating students in which provides an excellent academic foundation along with an enriching and thriving community for students (and their families) to engage in. For Tutorials alone, we are dedicated to bringing excellent and dedicated Tutors into our program that enjoy teaching and sharing with young people, and who bring to these students their enthusiasm, experience, and knowledge.
